Whitmore High School

Background
In   November 2006, the school was invited to bid for government money under the DCSF Building Schools for the Future funding. The bid was successful and £32 million was provided for a complete rebuild of the school. The school’s vision was of a place of learning fit for the 21st century, providing young people with an education that will equip them to join the society of the future with confidence. The project provided the school with the prospect not just of having new facilities, modern classrooms and state-of-the-art equipment, attractive though they will be. It also offered the opportunity for us to make exciting developments to the learning and teaching in the new school which we see centring on an innovative curriculum that will provide an enhanced three-year Key Stage 4 learning programme. Students will have a much richer and more flexible learning package, combining the current GCSE studies with vocational courses and enrichment activities. The new building also allows for an extension of the already strong community use of the school in the evenings and at weekends. Harrow Council has made a significant contribution to the facilities originally proposed so that there will be a large sports hall with spectator seating, as well as an extensive main hall and much enhanced dining facilities. There will be a hub kitchen providing hot meals for local schools and a larger fitness studio with extra amenities and equipment. External sporting facilities will include a football pitch and a running track.
